Rose Nelms Howard, 95, of Harlan, Ky., was born on June 20, 1920, and died Saturday, June 20, 2015, at her home following a fearless battle with cancer.
A woman of faith, she was a loyal member of Teetersville Baptist Church for more than 35 years. Having lost both of her parents by the age of eight, her growing family throughout the years became her passion and joy in life. From humble and challenging beginnings in her childhood, she found happiness in her marriage with the late Royal Nelms, which led to a life rich with countless family memories and devotion to her church. She traveled the world, including destinations such as Israel, Switzerland, Hawaii, England, Italy and France. In her later years, she found joy in a second marriage with Harlan Howard, and in walking, tending to her flowers and family time at home. She will be deeply missed.
She is preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth Nelms and Edward Nelms; her late husband of 47 years, Royal Nelms; her parents, Jim and Nan Campbell; four sisters, Marie Powell, Nell Earle, Dorothy Faulkner and Iona Langford; and three brothers, Ruben Campbell, Pearl Campbell and Charlie Campbell.
She is survived by a large and loving family: her husband, Harlan Howard, of Harlan, Ky.; two daughters, Kimberli Sears (Brad) of Harlan, Ky., and Dorris Prince (Parker) of Verona, Ky.; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Sears White, Will Sears, Tim Prince, Tony Prince, Angie Prince Scalf, Darla Nelms Cahill, Steve Nelms, Mike Nelms, Sandy Nelms, Roger Nelms, Leslie Nelms and Karleigh Nelms; 17 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Visitation will be Tues., June 23, 2015, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at Teetersville Baptist Church, with the funeral service immediately following, officiated by Rev. Billy Howell, Rev. Bob Rouse and Rev. Roger Jordan.
Interment will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in Keith.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Teetersville Baptist Church, 119 County Pike, Harlan, Ky. 40831, or the Lung Cancer Alliance at lungcanceralliance.org.
