LaVerne Wilson, 72 of Palestine, Texas, passed away on September 6, 2023 after a short illness. She was born on March 8, 1951 to Lena Shepherd Wilson and Eli Wilson in Hyden, Ky.
LaVerne left the local area at a young age moving to Chicago, IL where she would spend most of her life. She graduated from Kelly High School in 1969. She worked many jobs which included waitressing and working for the famous Brach’s Candy Company. She would then start selling newspaper and magazine subscriptions which led her to start working for the infamous Chicago Sun Times and The Chicago Tribune. This ultimately led her to start her own business named Horizon Marketing . Her company prospered which led her to become a successful self employed woman. Sissy could sell anybody anything!
“Sissy” the name given to her by her older and younger siblings and to which most of us called her, had several interests. She loved to shop , which meant if she needed 1- she bought 3. She loved to travel , often bringing several of us family members on her international trips to see the world. Cooking- she was simply one of the best cooks we know. Making the most delicious Thanksgiving meals you will have ever enjoyed, Staying in contact with old and new friends by spending hours just talking on the phone. She loved to garden, entertaining family and friends, and drinking red wine and champagne. LaVerne’s greatest passion though was for her beloved Dogs. Sissy was the proud owner of 3 Australian Shepherds named Zoe, Bleu and Bella who she loved like they were her babies.
LaVerne is preceded in death by her Mother, Lena Shepherd Wilson Howe; Father, Eli Wilson; Siblings, Howard Wilson, Evelyn Gayle Wilson , Jeffrey Wilson, Scott Howe and Nephew, Sean Novarro.
She is survived by her Brothers, Gareth Wilson (Nila Maxine) of Bledsoe, Wayne Wilson (Norma) of Bledsoe, Bill Wilson (Michelle) of Harlan, Pete Howe (Debra) of Oak Brook, IL and Eli Wilson of Knox County; Sisters, Lynnette Johnston of Corinth, MS, Deborah England of Middlesboro, Nancy Wagers of Lexington, Donna Hatfield of Middlesboro and Tammy Navigato (Tony) of Addison, IL. Dozens of loving nieces and nephews both near and far, local family members and lifelong friends will also mourn her passing.
LaVerne’s life was filled with hard work and many laughs, her legacy will live on through the memories she created with family members and friends.
For those who wish to pay their respects to LaVerne “Sissy” Wilson, a Celebration of Life visitation will be held on October 14, 2023, from 3PM -8PM in the Chapel of Mount Pleasant Funeral Home .
