Cathryn Tagmeyer

March 13, 1962 — October 3, 2024

Harlan

Tracy Cathryn Tagmeyer, age 62, of Harlan, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2024, in Lexington, Kentucky, listening to Pink Floyd in the embrace of family. Cathryn, a vibrant presence in the lives of everyone she met, was known for her warmth, laughter and unwavering support of her family, friends and the mountain she called home.

As a dedicated mother, some of Cathryn’s greatest joys came from her children; she said becoming a grandmother was the best event of her life. She is survived by her husband, Craig Tagmeyer; daughter, Sarah (Joe) Cahill, son, Tyler (Erica) Zell, granddaughter, Madeline and her mother, Janis Ross. She is predeceased by her father, Ronald Ross, second husband, Croley Forester, and survived by her first husband and the father of her children, David Zell. Cathryn cherished her family deeply and made every moment with them special. She was generous with her love.

Cathryn had a creative spirit and a passion for growth. For three decades, she was a gifted massage therapist at Baptist Hospital (Miami, FL) and Harlan ARH hospital. In the last decade of her life, she pursued a second career in public health, graduating from Kent State University. As a public health disease investigator, she developed several community projects that promote healthy eating and self-reliance.

Cathryn enjoyed the beauty of a well-crafted space, reading, plant-tending, travel and exploring the splendor of the Appalachian Mountains where she found peace and inspiration. She was a passionate advocate and used the challenging experiences in her life as opportunities to advocate for others. She loved Harlan fiercely, and worked hard to promote her hometown, businesses, organizations and individuals who make it so special. Her zest for life was infectious, and she brought joy to all who knew her.

She was an active member of the Christ Episcopal Church and had a strong faith. In her time as a cancer patient, she was never scared, but she felt the glory of God and surety of divine purpose.

A celebration of Cathryn’s life will be held on Friday 10/11/24 from 4-8 PM at Christ Episcopal Church, 420 Mound St, Harlan KY. Funeral Service is Noon on Saturday 10/12 at Harlan United Methodist Church 201 E. Mound St., Harlan KY.

The very last of Cathryn's many community projects was creating the "Friends of The Laurels" Amazon page to give back to the non-profit personal care home that has served residents since the 1930s. In lieu of flowers, please consider gifting the residents of The Laurels with items on the Amazon Wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/2J8MNAZO6R2SD (this can also be found by searching for “The Friends of the Laurels” with the gift registry search function). Checks may be mailed to The Laurels at 169 County Pike Rd, Harlan, KY 40831.
